Report forecasts thousands of jobs generated by high-speed rail

A report released Monday by the U.S. Conference of Mayors says that high-speed rail will create thousands of jobs in California.

The report studied four metropolitan areas where high-speed rail systems are proposed, including Los Angeles. By 2035, high-speed rail could generate up to $360 million in new spending and 10,000 jobs in the Los Angeles area, the report said.

One reason cited by the report for Los Angeles' anticipated economic growth is an increased number of business trips from the Central Valley.

The high-speed rail system will eventually link Los Angeles and San Francisco, and cities in between, including Merced, with trains running as fast as 220 miles per hour.
