One man suffered minor injuries Monday in a house fire reported in the Hilmar area.
The Merced County Fire Department responded to the scene at 5:25 p.m. in the 19000 block of Sanford Drive, according to Engineer Mario Rivera.
The fire started in the garage area and was beginning to spread to the inside of the home when firefighters arrived. The homeowner suffered from smoke inhalation and minor burns to his hands and face after he went back into the house to make sure no one was left behind, Rivera said.
The man was treated by Riggs Ambulance and taken to the hospital. No one else was hurt.
Firefighters contained the blaze within minutes, and the fire was extinguished by 9 p.m.
Rivera said firefighters haven't determined the cause of the fire, which remains under investigation. No neighboring structures were damaged.
Rivera said the home wasn't destroyed as a result of the fire, which caused about $30,000 in damage. "Firefighters made a terrific save of the residence," Rivera said.
A total of 22 firefighters, five engines, one water tender and one chief officer responded to the scene. A Turlock Irrigation District service truck also responded to help the firefighters.
