The Merced County Farm Bureau board voted last Thursday with a two-thirds majority to endorse Mike Berryhill in his bid to unseat Congressman Dennis Cardoza, D-Merced.
The endorsement could mark a political wind change counter to the farm bureau’s previous backing of Cardoza.
Amanda Carvajal, the farm bureau's executive director, said that her board backed Berryhill this year because of larger political concerns beyond just farming. She said they were upset with Cardoza’s support of health care reform, cap and trade and a bevy of other liberal legislative efforts. While the farm bureau won’t support Cardoza in November, Carvajal did say, “Cardoza has done a lot for ag in the past.”
Berryhill is a former Turlock Irrigation District director and a member of one of the Valley's most prominent political families. Cardoza has held the 18th Congressional District seat since 2003.
