Sheriff's detectives: Winton man dead of probable overdose of drugs and alcohol

The Merced Sheriff's Office said deputies found a 29-year-old man dead in his Winton home Friday afternoon, apparently the victim of an overdose of drugs and alcohol.

On Friday at 12:48 p.m., Merced Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to the 4000 block of Santa Fe Road in Winton on a report of a possible dead body. When deputies arrived, they found a 29-year-old-male dead inside a residence. Merced County Sheriff’s detectives were called to the scene to investigate.

After their investigation, they determined that most likely the victim died from an overdose of alcohol and drugs, according to Deputy Tom Mackenzie. From interviews with friends, the detectives learned that he had a habit of drinking heavily. The official cause of death won't be determined until an autopsy can be performed, but at this point, detectives believe the death was accidental and have no reason to believe any foul play involved, MacKenzie added.

The victim died while drinking with just a few people at the residence and not some large gathering, MacKenzie said. At the time the sheriff's office issued a news release Sunday morning, it was unknown if next-of-kin had been notified, so his name is being withheld.
