UPDATE: Five injured in single-vehicle crash

Several people were injured early Tuesday morning in a solo truck crash on East Olive Avenue near Bedford Drive, Merced police reported.

The crash was reported at 2:09 a.m. after the driver, a 21-year-old male, was traveling westbound on Olive Avenue around 50-55 mph in a 2001 Chevy half-ton pick-up. Four passengers were inside the truck, according to Sgt. Jay Struble.

For unknown reasons, the truck veered to the right and left the roadway. The right front side of the truck struck a tree. A passenger, 21-year-old Phillip Lopez, suffered serious injuries and was taken to a Modesto hospital.

The driver and three passengers -- two males and a female ages 22 to 17 -- were taken to Mercy Medical Center Merced with minor injuries.Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the case, although Struble said the driver’s blood was drawn to determined whether prescription pills played a role.
