Delhi family lost in Stanislaus National Forest found safe

A Delhi father and his two sons reported missing in the Stanislaus National Forest have been found.

Lupe Avila, 35, of Delhi, and his two young sons had gone on a bear hunting trip in the Stanislaus National Forest. Avila didn't leave a specific place where he was going, and when the trio was 24 hours overdue Thursday, they were reported missing to the Tuolumne County Sheriff's Department.

Sgt. Jeff Wilson said the person who reported the trio missing was able to contact them by a marine radio and discovered the family had been stuck in snow but were being helped out.

Wilson said apparently the three people were fine, although the Sheriff's Department hadn't had contact with Avila yet.

According to Jerry Snyder, spokesman for the Stanislaus National Forest, there's a lot of snow on the ground in the forest, more than usual for this time of the year, and the temperatures have been below freezing.
