Merced College's Community Services Department said Lorraine Walsh will serve as director of the Merced Children's Choir.
Walsh, an award-winning vocalist and local artist, teaches Voice and Music History at Merced College. She also conducts the UC Merced Chorale and teaches all of the university's vocal classes, in addition to Music Theory.
As a vocalist, Walsh has performed throughout the U.S. and has traveled to Europe for concerts in Italy, France, Switzerland, Romania and Greece. She has also been the recipient of numerous awards, including prizes in international vocal competitions, first-place honors at the Young Artist Vocal Competition of Southern California and a two-time regional finalist in the Metropolitan Opera Auditions and regional finalist in the prestigious MacAllister Award competition.
The Children's Choir is a mixed choir of young singers ages 7-12. The program has been providing Merced area youth with opportunities to study music, sing, and perform for the past five years, the college said in a news release. The 15-week program allows young choristers to learn a variety of musical techniques, including vocal production, music reading, rhythm, dictation and more. All youth interested in the chorale program-both experienced and beginners-are encouraged to participate, the news release said.
Children's Choir practice begins Wednesday, Jan. 26, and runs through May 11. Practice is located in Lesher-111 on the Merced College campus from 3:30 to 5 p.m. The cost per child is $110.
