Merced Sun-Star reporters Ameera Butt and Mike North talk with Michelle Allison, former president of the Merced chapter of the NAACP, and local historian Almetres Huddleston, about Black History Month. The NAAACP chapter of Merced was founded in the 1930s. Seven percent of the Merced population is African American. And the first black people settled in the area in the 1920s. Most were involved in farming initially until they moved onto working at the military base.
