20-year-old woman injured in Merced shooting

A 20-year-old woman was hospitalized early Sunday after being shot at a Merced apartment complex off North Highway 59, police reported.

Lt. Tom Trindad said there are gang overtones, although the motive remains under investigation. No arrests have been made.

Police responded to the scene shortly before 1:30 a.m. at 2620 N. Highway 59, after receiving a call about a fight where shots had been fired.

Officers arrived and found the victim lying outside the complex, shot in her lower abdomen. She was flown to a Modesto hospital and Trindad said the wound appeared to be serious. The victim's condition remains unknown.

The shooter is described as a La- tino male who fled in a car.

Trindad said officers had responded twice Saturday evening to the same complex, because of fights between tenants. Trindad said the shooting appears to be linked to those fights.
