ATWATER -- A 16-year-old girl is recovering after being stabbed in a gang-related incident Wednesday night in Atwater, police reported.Police say the girl was stabbed because of the color of her sweatshirt.
The suspect remains at large.
The stabbing happened around 7:30 p.m. The victim was walking near Buhach and Bellevue roads and was approached by three women outside a convenience store. One of the three women, 20-year-old Maria Sendi Andrade, questioned the victim about the color of the sweatshirt she was wearing, according to Detective Armando Echevarria.
The victim ignored Andrade and continued walking.
The trio then followed the victim to the 2700 block of Secretariat Drive and Andrade stabbed her, Echevarria said. The victim was able to escape and officers located her less than a mile away from where she was stabbed. She was flown to a Modesto hospital and is expected to survive.
The weapon used in the attack hasn't been recovered. A photo of Andrade wasn't available Thursday.
