The Wawona Boy Scout District recently held its annual volunteer recognition awards program.
More than 35 awards and recognition were presented to Scouts from Merced, Atwater, Los Banos, Livingston and Mariposa. Some 150 Scout leaders and guests attended the event held at Gateway Community Church.
One of the highlights was the presentation of the Heroism Award from the National Court of Honor of the Boy Scouts of America to Cub Scout Jerrod Nickerson of Cub Scout Pack No. 96 sponsored by the Merced Christian Life Center. The award was for saving his grandfather’s life in a boating incident in August 2010.
Other awards presented included various scout leader training awards, Cub Scout of the Year to Sean Stanke, a Webelos Cub Scout with Pack No. 96; Boy Scout of the Year to Zachary Wilson with Los Banos Boy Scout Troop No. 58; Venture Scout of the Year to Chris Huffman with Livingston Venture Crew No. 007; Explorer Scout of the Year to John Garcia with Merced Police Explorer Post No. 204.
The Wawona District scouting Unit of the Year awards went to Cub Scout Pack No. 85 from Los Banos and Boy Scout Troop No. 94 from Mariposa. The evening ended with the presentation of the District Award of Merit for outstanding service to scouting in the Wawona District. Scout leaders honored with the award were Zachery Ford, assistant scoutmaster with Mariposa Boy Troop No. 94; Karla Scott, committee member with Los Banos Cub Pack No. 85; James Doyle, Wawona District Order of the Arrow Chapter adviser’ and Danean Stanke, Webelos Den Leader with Merced Cub Scout Pack No. 96.
