12 p.m.: The man killed by an Amtrak train in Planada on Monday has been identified as Steven Miller, 23, of Trinity County. He had been staying in Planada, according to the Merced County Sheriff's Department.
Earlier: A 23-year-old man is dead after he was hit by a train Monday night. Merced County Sheriff's spokesman Tom Mackenzie said the man was chasing his dog near the railroad tracks near Santa Fe Avenue and Market Street in Planada when he was struck by the train around 6:30 p.m.
Mackenzie said it was a passenger Amtrak train that was going at speeds of about 70 miles per hour. Officials hope to identify the man this afternoon with finger prints.
The Merced County Sheriff’s Department, California Highway Patrol, and the Railroad Police responded to the incident.
