The 2011 Merced County Fair officially kicks off Wednesday, June 15, and “Saddle Up For Fun” is the theme of this year’s production, a celebration of horses.
This is a big week for 4-H, FFA and independent livestock exhibitors. Many families make the fairgrounds their home and camp out here during the fair, which runs through Sunday, June 19.
Monday:7 a.m. Weigh-in for all livestock starts with swine and wraps up by noon. 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Receiving entries in decorated doors, wind chimes and window boxes.10 a.m. All goats, pigs, sheep, beef and dairy cows must be in their places.Done. A lot of the judging including baked goods, clothing and textiles, wine and fine arts including watercolor paintings and photography.1 p.m. Hay Growers Contest. Physical judging.5 p.m. Judging for gardens starts.
Tuesday:8 a.m. FFA Market and Feeder Swine judging10 a.m. Dairy showmanship.1 p.m. Ag/Horticulture exhibits judged, for example, gardens in wagons and wheelbarrows.Ongoing: last day of selling discount carnival coupons and admission tickets at fair's box office window until 5 p.m., getting carnival rides ready to go, setting up midway games, vendors gearing up for sales, final touches on exhibit buildings and grounds and preparing outdoor theater for concerts and grandstand for auto races.
Fair organizers said in a news release that people have been lining up to buy discount admission and carnival tickets. The deadline to buy bargain tickets is Tuesday, June 14, at www.MercedCountyFair.com, the fairgrounds’ box office and Rancho San Miguel — sales times depend on location.All entertainment and attractions are free with the price of admission except for Sunday's Gran Jaripeo.What's New: Trailer Races in the Grandstand, All Alaskan Racing Pigs, Great American Petting Zoo, Peddle Tractor Pull Races, Stick Horse Races, Wine judging and chocolate-dipped bacon.
Daily Fun: Sunshine Lane Family Zone, Hypnotist Terry Stokes, more than 35 carnival and Kiddieland rides, an antique tractor parade, "Saddle Up for Fun" Feature Exhibit, wine garden and Health Plan of San Joaquin Community Stage.
