USP Atwater says several inmates injured in fight; public not in danger, prison says

The United States Penintentiary in Atwater said several inmates were involved in a fight in a housing unit at the federal prison Tuesday morning. Staff members immediately responded to the incident and quickly contained the situation, according to a statement from the institution.

The inmates involved suffered minor injuries. Some staff members also suffered minor injuries and were treated by institution medical staff.The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation. All inmates are temporarily confined to their cells. The FBI was notified. At no time was the public in danger, the statement said.

USP Atwater houses about 1,150 high-security male inmates.
