Merced Arts Council to feature author Francisco Alarcon, 'Belly Button Man,' July 30

The Merced Arts Council said it will host author Francisco Alarcon, known as “The Belly Button Man,” Saturday, July 30, from 11 a.m. to noon at the Multicultural Arts Center, 645 Main Street in Merced.

The event is part of “Demand The Arts Fundraiser” and will feature Alarcon reading from “Laughing Tomatoes.” The Merced Arts Council said in a news release that it is at a crossroads. Instead of closing its doors because of a lack of funds, the council is taking its Rescue the Arts campaign to the streets, and beginning the second phase of s campaign with this fundraiser.

To kick off the campaign, Alarcon, director of the Spanish for Native Speakers Program at UC Davis, will appear and read his book.

Donations of $1 and up are requested. There will be face-painting by Chloe’s Kids, and you can meet the author.
