Los Banos campsite evacuated due to grass fire

About 35 people were evacuated from a campsite Tuesday after a fire broke out near the Los Banos Creek State Recreation Area, Cal Fire reported.

No injuries were reported during the fire, which burned about 59 acres, according to Karen Guillemin, Cal Fire spokesperson.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, although firefighters believe the blaze was sparked by a vehicle.

The fire was first reported at 1:05 p.m. near Interstate 5 and Canyon Road and contained by 6:05 p.m. No structures were damaged during the incident.

About 30 firefighters responded to the scene.

The evacuated campsite is for day use purposes only, and isn't open during the evening, Guillemin said.

Los Banos Police Department, Merced County Sheriffs Office, and California Highway Patrol assisted firefighters during the incident.
