Two men and a 17-year-old boy were arrested late Wednesday after authorities say they tried to escape from Merced police in a stolen car.
Alfred Castellanos, 22, Christian Arroyo-Lopez, 18, and the boy were taken into custody shortly after an officer saw a 1986 Ford Escort carrying four people near West 13th Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Way, according to Lt. Roger McIntyre.
Officer Jeff Gonzales became suspicious after the car made an unsafe turn into traffic.
Gonzales determined the driver was attempting to evade him, as the car made another quick turn onto West Second Street.
Two passengers jumped out of the moving car and ran.
Gonzales followed the car until Castellanos tried to jump from the driver's seat. The car crashed into a chain-link fence at the corner of R and Third streets. Castellanos tried to run, but was arrested. Police also determined he was driving under the influence.
Arroyo-Lopez, who was seated in the right-rear passenger seat, was arrested without incident.
Officers checked the surrounding area and spotted the 17-year-old hiding in an apartment complex. The other person who ran remains at large.
Castellanos was booked into the jail on suspicion of possessing stolen property, DUI, reckless driving and resisting arrest. Arroyo-Lopez was booked on suspicion of possessing stolen property.
The 17-year-old was booked at juvenile hall on suspicion of possessing stolen property and resisting arrest.
