Merced artists Monica Modest and Kristan Robinson were selected to decorate the G Street underpass when it opens this winter.
Their concepts were picked out of the 18 submissions -- some from as far away as the Philippines — sent to the city for the G Street project.
Modest’s proposal includes a walkway panel called "Faces of Merced," which would present painted faces on 6-by-4-inch ceramic tiles. Other panels would feature landmarks of Merced and Yosemite National Park. Modest is also working on a tile project in downtown Merced called the “Tree of Life,” which should be unveiled in Bob Hart Square later this year.
Robinson's murals will depict the skyscapes of Merced, including the tree-lined Courthouse Park and an almond orchard in full bloom.
The Merced City Council has budgeted $200,000 for the art work.
