Kathleen Pon, assistant superintendent of the Patterson Joint Unified School District, has accepted the position of assistant superintendent of instructional services for the Merced County Office of Education.
Pon started with MCOE on July 1 and is one of six assistant superintendents who help lead the county schools office of about 1,400 employees.
The Instructional Services department operates the ASSETS afterschool program, Beginning Teacher Support and Assessment, Categorical Programs, MCOE's Instructional Media Center, Merced Educational Television (METV), Migrant Education and Special Events along with providing teachers and administrators with professional development.
"Kathy brings the school and district perspective to MCOE with 30 years of experience in education," said MCOE Superintendent Steve Gomes in a press release.
For the past five years, Pon served as the assistant superintendent of educational services with Patterson Unified School District, and oversaw the district’s curriculum and instructional programs, including textbook adoption. She also administered all state and local assessments and accountability programs.
Pon has previously worked in school districts in Newman, Crows Landing and Los Banos.
Currently enrolled in the education leadership doctorate program at Cal State Stanislaus, Pon has an administrative credential and master's degree and was named the 2010 Association for California School Administrators Administrator of the Year in Curriculum and Instruction.
