A man was killed early Sunday morning after being struck by a freight train off West Santa Fe Avenue, between Glen Avenue and G Street, Merced police reported.
The incident was reported around 3:57 a.m. and the name of the victim hasn’t been released, according to Lt. Andre Matthews.
According to an employee on the train, it appeared that the victim was lying across the tracks possibly asleep and the train couldn't avoid hitting him.
Still, Matthews said many circumstances about the crash remain unknown, and the incident remains under investigation.
