A 71-year-old Hilmar woman who received major injuries Wednesday in a four vehicle collision on Highway 165 and Johnson Avenue in Hilmar has died at Doctors Medical Center of Modesto, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The woman's name hasn't been released by the coroner's office, pending notification of her family or next-of-kin.
The crash was reported around 2:15 p.m. Wednesday and involved two big rigs, a 2002 Mazda and the victim's Dodge Ram pickup. The victim's pickup was stopped on southbound Highway 165 ahead of an approaching Peterbilt tractor trailer and behind the Mazda.
A Freightliner tractor trailer traveling southbound on the highway had stopped at Johnson Avenue. The driver of the Peterbilt, 42-year-old Angel Lopez of Madera, failed to see stopped traffic ahead of him. He turned the truck to the left and drove partially into the northbound lane, but couldn't avoid a collision, according to the CHP.
The right front of the Peterbilt struck the victim's Dodge. The impact pushed the Dodge forward, and it collided with the Mazda. The Mazda was then pushed into the rear of the Freightliner. The driver of the Mazda, 22-year-old Jessica Roberts of Modesto, sustained moderate injures, and was taken to Doctors Medical Center of Modesto. Lopez and the driver of the Freightliner were unhurt.
DUI does not appear to be a factor in the crash.
