A 65-year-old Dos Palos man suffered moderate injuries Friday in a two-car vehicle crash reported on eastbound Highway 152 near Box Car Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.
CHP investigators believe the crash was caused by a drunk driver, who was behind the wheel of a big rig.
The crash, reported near Los Banos, happened after 52-year-old Stanislaw Tomczyk of Brooklyn, NY was traveling in a 2000 Freightliner eastbound on Highway 152 at about 55 mph in the slow lane. Meanwhile, 65-year-old Antonio Hernandez of Dos Palos was traveling in the fast lane at 60 mph alongside Tomczyk in a 1998 Ford F-150.
Tomczyk made a left turn from his lane, crashing into the right front side of Hernandez's truck. The crash caused the Ford F-150 to be pushed to the left, coming to a rest in the highway's center median, the CHP reported.
After the crash, CHP investigators said Tomczyk tried to drive away from the scene. He made a right turn onto westbound Highway 152 and drove the wrong way on the highway for about a mile. Tomcyzk then drove to the next intersection, turned northbound onto Branco Road and made a U-turn.
A CHP officer saw Tomczyk driving away and stopped the truck. After an investigation, Tomczyk was booked into the Merced County Jail on suspicion of felony hit and run with injuries and felony DUI with injuries.
Hernandez was taken to Memorial Hospital Los Banos and treated.
Tomczyk remains at the jail in lieu of $60,000 bail.
