Homeless man arrested after Merced police find stolen van

A homeless man was arrested Sunday night after he was driving a Chevy Astro Van that had been reported stolen, Merced police say.

Merced police received an alert from the California Highway Patrol about a red 1994 Chevy Astro Van driving recklessly near Highway 99 and East Childs Avenue. Around 10 p.m., Officer Dayna Dejong saw the van parked in the Valero gas station at 1975 E. Childs Ave. A scan of the vehicle's license plate revealed the van had been reported stolen, police said.

Mitchell Wayne Henson, 48, a transient, was arrested and booked on charges of grand theft auto and possession of stolen property.
