Body of Dr. Greg Meyer found; Merced memorial service scheduled for Aug. 13

The body of Dr. Greg Meyer, who was swept off a bridge in Yosemite National Park June 29, was recovered July 15, according to his father, Chuck Meyer.

Meyer, 53, and physician assistant Richard Fox, 53, were swept to their deaths while trying to cross a bridge at Wapama Falls, swollen by near-record ice melt. Meyer was trying to save Fox, who'd lost his footing. His wife, Paula Meyer, was with them on their backpacking trip.

An autopsy performed in Sonora said his death was due to head trauma, Chuck Meyer said.

A memorial service will be held in Merced Aug. 13 at 10 a.m. at the Christian Life Center, with a reception to follow at the center.

A memorial service was held last Saturday in Whittier, where Greg Meyer practiced emergency medicine, and lasted five hours so various shifts could attend from Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital.

Chuck Meyer also said the family has established a scholarship fund in Greg’s name at UC Merced. Contributions can be sent for the Dr. Greg Meyer Scholarship in Medical Education. The mailing address is UC Merced Grant Administration Office, 5200 N. Lake Road, Merced, CA 95343. Please include your return address.--Mike Tharp
