Nine people, including two juveniles, were arrested Sunday in connection with a cockfighting ring broken up by Madera County sheriff's deputies.
About 9 a.m. Sunday, deputies received a tip indicating 20 people were at a home located at 18370 Road 19, near Dixieland Elementary School, with fighting roosters.
When deputies got to the home, dozens left the scene.
Five adults were cited and released. The two men who hosted the event were booked into the Madera County jail. They live at the home, sheriff's officials said.
About 40 birds were found and nearly a dozen had to be euthanized because of injuries. Boxes filled with spurs used on the roosters also were recovered.
