Man shot by assailant on bicycle near Golden Valley High School

The Merced Police Department said a 20-year-old man was shot late Wednesday by an unknown suspect on a bicycle near Golden Valley High School.

The victim was taken to Memorial Hospital in Modesto and is in serious but stable condition.

Police dispatchers sent officers on a shots-fired call and found Michael Anthony Carvajal suffering from gunshot wounds. The call had come from the 1600 block of Ellen Avenue.

Carvajal said he was walking down the sidewalk on Parsons Avenue in front of Golden Valley High when he was approached by a Hispanic male on a bicycle. Carvajal said that, without warning, the suspect on the bicycle pulled out a gun and started shooting at him. Carvajal was struck by bullets, but managed to run away from the area to a nearby friend's house.

Carvajal was able to provide the police with little information about the suspect or a motive for the shooting. The investigation is continuing, and anyone with information is urged to call the Merced Police Department Detective Division at (209) 385-4702 or the tip line at (209) 385-4725.
