A correctional officer was injured when a suspect allegedly attacked him while being booked into John Latorraca Correctional Facility.

Michael McCarran, 40, was arrested by the Merced Police Department on suspicion of public intoxication and was brought to the county jail around 3 a.m. During the booking process, McCarran became combative.

The correctional officer suffered injuries to his ribs. The Merced County Sheriff's Department said McCarran has a history of resisting arrest, battery on a peace officer and public intoxication. The incident is still under investigation.

McCarran may face charges of assault and battery on a custodial officer, the sheriff's department said. Depending on the seriousness of the officer's injuries, McCarran may also face several felony charges.
