DOS PALOS -- A 22-year-old man was arrested Sunday after police say he carried a loaded shotgun into the Dos Palos Cotton Festival.

The Merced County Sheriff's Department said Det. Jose Sanchez was working at the festival when he heard about rumors of a shooting being planned that night. He obtained a description of a suspect, who he found inside O'Banion Park. David Ortega, 22, was found carrying a 18-inch, 12-gauge shotgun with a filed-off pistol grip hidden in his pant leg. Ortega told Sanchez he was in the park when another suspect pulled a gun on him, so he went to his vehicle and grabbed his shotgun for protection.

Sanchez arrested Ortega on suspicion of carrying a concealed weapon, carrying a loaded firearm in public, participation in a criminal street gang and possession of a concealed firearm. He remains in jail on $61,000 bail.
