The Merced Sheriff's Office is investigating an industrial accident that occurred Monday in the 14000 block of Harding Avenue in Delhi.
A 43-year-old worker was trying to clear a "de-stacker" — a machine that takes a hay bale and makes it smaller to be shipped to Japan. The sheriff’s office received the call at 7:44 a.m., little more than an hour after the injury. Fire and ambulance units responded, and the man was flown to a Modesto-area hospital.
Early investigation indicates that he was on top of the machine and forgot to turn off the safety switch, the sheriff’s office said in a news release. When he crossed in front of an electric eye, the machine mistook him for a hay bale and he was pinched, caught between his stomach and back.
It is unknown the extent of his injuries, but they were listed as "severe," according to the news release. Identification was withheld pending notification of next-of-kin.
