A Merced man was arrested after police said he stole a car and then drove it onto a sidewalk.
Eduardo Tarin Angel, 21, was found by police officers at midnight Monday standing near a car that had been driven onto the sidewalk at 22nd and R streets. The car nearly hit a tree and a parked car before coming to a rest.
Angel appeared to be intoxicated and was uncooperative with police, officers said.
Meanwhile, other officers reported learning that Angel had stolen the car from two men in the 400 block of Canal Street.
The two victims, who asked police to remain unidentified, were leaving for work when Angel approached them and started beating the driver. The men struggled with Angel, but he took their car and drove away, police said.
During the arrest, police said Angel assaulted one of the officers and later assaulted another officer while they were at the hospital trying to obtain a blood sample from him. Angel is a validated gang member, police said.
Angel was booked into the Merced County Jail on suspicion of carjacking, drunken driving and assault on a police officer.
