Susan Walsh received some good news at this week’s Merced City School District Board of Education meeting — the gym being built at Rivera Middle School is almost ready for students to use.
“This is exciting,” Walsh said. “I’m grateful for the collaboration with the city. There really are so few happy things but this is a win-win.”
RoseMary Parga Duran, district superintendent, said the Measure S oversight committee has volunteered to oversee the naming process for the $4.5 million Buena Vista Drive facility, built with a $950,000 contribution from the city of Merced, $1.5 million from the state and the rest in bond funds.
Duran said the public has until Nov. 15 at 5 p.m. to submit names for the gym and some people already have responded. The committee will screen the nominations and board members will name the facility at their January meeting.
The gym could be ready for student use next Monday, Assistant Superintendent Greg Spicer said.
An open house/grand opening will be held Oct. 19 at 4 p.m. for the Rivera gym.
