October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the Merced City Fire Department and the Merced city firefighters union have found a way to show support for this cause.
During the month of October city firefighters will be wearing pink to honor the heroes who are fighting breast cancer. The Merced city firefighters union also has teamed up with the Susan G. Komen’s “Passionately Pink for the Cure” to sell T-shirts to raise funds for breast cancer research.A news conference will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, at Station 51, 99 E. 16th St. to show the public the work T-shirts that the Fire Department staff will wear during October. In addition, off-duty firefighters will talk about their involvement in the fight against breast cancer, and their upcoming fundraising efforts.
Risk factors include: · Having a personal history of breast cancer; · Getting older;· Having a family history of breast, ovarian or prostate cancer.
The Merced City Firefighters Union encourages the following to stop the spread of this disease:-Know your risk: Talk to your family about your past history and talk to your doctor about your risk;-Get screened: Have a clinical breast exam every three years starting at the age of 20 and every year after the age of 40;-Know what is normal for you: Monthly self-exams are the first step in early detection and treatment, share changes with your doctor;-Make healthy lifestyle changes: Maintain a healthy weight, add exercise into your routine, consume more vegetables and limit alcohol intake.
The Merced City Firefighters Union will hosting various fundraising events around the city of Merced during the month of October. Pink T-shirts similar to the ones worn by the firefighters will be available for sale at the events with 100 percent of the money raised going to breast cancer research.
