The Merced Community College Board of Trustees invites public comment on three redistricting scenarios to be presented during its regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 4, at 6 p.m. at the Los Banos Campus.
The Merced Community College District is in the process of redistricting its trustee areas using newly available 2010 U.S. census figures. Redistricting is a process in which trustee area populations are equalized and their boundaries are adjusted in compliance with applicable state and federal law. The district is required to go through the redistricting process every 10 years after completion of the U.S. census.
During its Sept. 6 public hearing, the board reviewed legal guidelines for the redistricting process and adopted local criteria and goals. The board also directed the Merced County Association of Governments to develop redistricting scenarios.
In addition to the Oct. 4 public hearing, the board will convene and additional public hearing Tuesday, Oct. 18. at the main campus in Merced.Also, in the interest of gathering more public comment, the district will hold public outreach meetings on Tuesday, Oct. 11, at 6 p.m. at the Business Resource Center, 630 W. 19th Street in Merced, and on Thursday, October 27 at 6 p.m. at the Los Banos Campus.Sun-Star staff
