Dos Palos police arrest a parolee for a carjacking in Stockton

The Dos Palos Police Department arrested a parolee wanted for a carjacking in Stockton.

On Thursday, the department’s communication tech, Adriana Ruiz, noticed a man “acting strangely” in the 1600 block of Center Avenue, according to a news release. The man later was identified as Jose Luis Ortiz, 45, who police said had arrived in Dos Palos a few hours earlier.

"Our communication techs commonly use camera equipment to keep an eye out on certain areas in the city, Chief Barry Mann said in the release.

Ruiz sent an officer to the area. Officer Joe Green responded and contacted the subject. Green learned Oritz was a parolee from Stockton and was in Dos Palos area without a pass.

During his interview with Ortiz, Green determined that the suspect had probably stolen a vehicle from Stockton to make the trip to Dos Palos, according to the news release.

Green told Mann who began searching for the vehicle. He located a Green Ford Ranger parked in the 1800 Block of California Avenue. A records check showed that the vehicle had been stolen earlier that morning in a reported carjacking.

After speaking with the Stockton Police Department, Dos Palos officers were able to locate the weapon used in the carjacking, which was reported to be a knife.

Green arrested Ortiz for theft of a motor vehicle, possession of stolen property and violation of parole. --Sun-Star staff
