Loughborough shooting becomes homicide investigation

A shooting in Merced's Loughborough area Friday night has turned into a homicide investigation.

The victim, a male pedestrian, was taken to the hospital in critical condition after being shot about 7:30 p.m. in the 1000 block of Loughborough Drive. About 1 a.m. Saturday, police said the victim had died.

No arrests have been made in the case.

The victim was outside near the Oak Terrace Apartments when shots were fired, according to Lt. Roger McIntyre.

The name or age of the victim hasn't been released. Thus far, police have only said he was a black man. Officials at the coroner's office said Sunday they are reviewing fingerprint records to confirm the victim's identity.

Officers set up a perimeter on Loughborough Drive between M and R streets, and processed the scene.

No suspect description is available, although McIntyre said the victim was able to tell police a white, four-door car was involved.
