Teen stabbed in South Merced gang assault

A teenager was stabbed Sunday night in South Merced by two suspected gang members, Merced Police said.

Carlos Villagran, 18, was approached by two Hispanic men in their 20s around 6:30 p.m. Sunday. The men asked Villagran if he "banged" -- a slang phrase for gang member. When Vallagran told he wasn't a gang member, the suspects took him to the ground and began assaulting him. During the assault, Vallagran struck his head on a fire hydrant, causing a large laceration. The suspects then ran away.

Vallagran later told police officers that he had pain on the left side of his lower body. That was when they saw blood soaking through his clothing and realized he had been stabbed. Villagran was taken by ambulance to Doctors Medical Center of Modesto.

Anyone with information in this case may call Det. Sgt. Scott Skinner at (209) 385-4702, or the Merced Police Department's Tipster Line at (209) 385-4725.
