Merced city offices closed; tips on holiday trash

The city of Merced offices will be closed Dec. 26 for the Christmas holiday and Jan. 2 for the New Year’s holiday. The City Council meeting will be held Tuesday, Jan. 3, because of the holiday. The trash collection schedule won’t be affected by the office closures. Refuse will be picked up on the regular days during the week after Christmas and New Year’s.

A few reminders from the Public Works Departments: Christmas gift wrap isn’t recyclable, so please dispose of it in the trash. Same with bows and ribbons. Christmas trees can be disposed of in the green container and they will be composted. Please cut them into 4- to 6-foot lengths. If the tree is flocked, it needs to be put in the garbage. Don’t burn your gift wrap or your tree in the fireplace — it’s dangerous, it pollutes the air and can cause a fire. And don’t drink and drive. During the holidays there will be increased enforcement patrols, so make sure that when you arrive at a party, you have a designated driver with you.
