Two assailants shoot clerk, rob liquor store in Merced Christmas night

The Merced Police Department said a liquor store clerk was shot Christmas night by two assailants who robbed the store. The clerk was taken to a hospital for treatment of his injuries and the suspects remain on the loose.

The department got a call at 10:30 p.m. Sunday about an armed robbery that had just taken place in the U-Save Liquor Store at 1846 Yosemite Parkway. A clerk called, saying that he’d just been shot by two assailants who robbed the store. The two suspects came into the store armed with handguns, according to a department news release. The suspects demanded money and shot the clerk, who was described in the news release as “cooperative,” before leaving the store.

The suspects, who were wearing dark clothing and had their faces covered, fled the store with an undisclosed amount of money. Information on the clerk’s condition wasn’t immediately available.

The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Detective Sergeant Scott Skinner at (209) 385-4702, or the Merced Police Department Tipster Line at (209) 385-4725.--Sun-Star staff
