The California Highway Patrol said one man died and another was injured Saturday night in a one-vehicle rollover in the Los Banos area. Alcohol is suspected in the case, CHP said in a news release.
Around 7:30 p.m. Kurt Knapp, 27, of Turlock, was driving a 2002 Chevrolet Silverage pickup north on Santa Fe Grade south of Gun Club Road at about 55 to 60 mph. Knapp allowed the pickup to drift of the right shoulder on Santa Fe Grade, according to the release. He turned back to the left but lost control of the pickup, which continued in a northwesterly direction and overturned in a swamp area west of the roadway.
The truck came to rest on its roof in about four feet of water. As a result of the collision, a 29-year-old male passenger from Turlock suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. His name is being withheld pending notifiction of next-of-kin.
Knapp suffered major injruies and was taken to Memorial North Hospital in Modesto via a Mercy air ambulance. He’s suspected to have been driving under the influence at the time of the collision, CHP said in the news release.
