A 23-year-old man killed New Year's Eve after being struck by an Amtrak train has been identified as Manuel Jesus Angon of Merced.
The incident happened on the Santa Fe Drive railroad tracks, about a half mile west of Highway 59, the Merced County Sheriff's Department reported. The Sheriff's Department says the death appears to be accidental.
Angon was walking eastbound on the tracks when the train approached from behind at about 70 mph, according to deputy Tom MacKenzie, sheriff's spokesman.
Witnesses said Angon was looking at paperwork while he was walking. The conductor blew the train's horn, but the man did not move from the tracks. The man finally appeared to step to his left, but he wasn’t able to step away in time to avoid being struck by the train, MacKenzie said.
Paramedics responded to the scene and treated Angon, but he was later pronounced dead at a hospital.
