It's not exactly a ringing endorsement, but lame duck Congressman Dennis Cardoza is apparently defecting to The Colbert Nation.
Cardoza, a Blue Dog Democrat, said in a blog post that once former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman dropped out of the Republican primaries on Monday, he had little choice but to endorse Stephen Colbert, Comedy Central's "comedic crusader."
He even used an exclamation point, so you know he's serious.
Calling Huntsman the "last sane, faithful, intelligent, non-flip flopping, non-rightwing nut" who was still standing, Cardoza said Colbert's comedic campaign draws attention to serious issues plaguing national politics. Most importantly, campaign finance: "If money truly equals 'free speech,' why should anyone listen to what an average voter has to say?," he wrote on the blog. "Want to put in your two cents? Sorry, the price just went up."
We assume Cardoza's speaking from experience. You may recall that he skipped UC Merced's 2009 graduation ceremony -- y'know, the one with Michelle Obama -- because he was at a race track in Maryland hosting a $5,000-a-head fundraiser. That money went toward his "Moderate Victory Fund," a political action committee that aids other candidates. According to past Sun-Star coverage, his fund raised about $102,000 in 2008 from such average joes as Wal-Mart, Comcast and the National Association of Realtors.
So Cardoza's on the Colbert train, but he says he'll continue to support Barack Obama for his own party's nomination because he can't "bear the thought of another Clarence Thomas or Anthony Scalia" being appointed to the Supreme Court bench.
But he sort of likes Mitt Romney, too.
