A Merced man was killed late Thursday night when his pickup truck rolled over in a rain storm and landed in a canal upside-down.
His name was withheld pending notification of next-of-kin.
Around 11:30 p.m., the 42-year-old driver of a white 2007 Dodge Ram 2500 pickup was traveling west on Dickenson Ferry Road, west of Highway 59, at an undetermined speed, according to a California Highway Patrol news release.
For unknown reasons, CHP said, the truck traveled to the right and onto the north dirt shoulder. It rotated counter-clockwise and moved sideways to the northwest along a canal bank.
The truck rolled over and came to rest on its roof in the canal, which held about six inches of water, the CHP release said. The pickup suffered major damage and although the driver was wearing a seatbelt, he suffered fatal injuries as a result of the collision, CHP said.
It’s unknown whether DUI was a factor, and the collison remains under investigation.
