Merced police found blood, shell casings and numerous bullet holes in vehicles outside a house party over the weekend, but exactly what happened remained a mystery.

An 18-year-old man told police he had been shot in the head during a large party early Sunday at 137 Sisco De Asis Court in Merced, but detectives later determined the man had been hit with a bottle, Sgt. Curt Gorman said in a news release.

The victim suffered a minor wound above his right eye. Police described him as uncooperative. His name was not released.

Officers were called to the home about 1:40 a.m. Sunday after receiving several reports of multiple gunshots.

Police stopped a vehicle in the neighborhood with a bullet hole in its windshield a short time later. The driver told police that several uninvited people arrived at the party and said that group was “responsible” for the shooting, according to police.

It was unclear if more than one gunman was involved, and the exact number of shots fired was unknown.

“As officers arrived on scene they located a couple of cars that had been struck by bullets, but no other victims,” Gorman said in the release. “The party was shut down, but officers did find shell casings and blood in the driveway and on the front porch.”

No descriptions of the suspect were available Sunday.

Anyone with information about the incident is urged to call Merced police Detective Joe Deliman at (209) 564-0625.
