Students at Rivera Middle School in Merced will be able to make their own ice cream, rubber band cars and soda bottle rockets thanks to the UC Merced Get S.E.T. Service Learning Team.
Get S.E.T. will host a Science Night at Rivera on April 13, at 5 p.m. in the school’s cafeteria.
A collaboration between UC Merced engineering students and the Merced County Office of Education, the team helps students in Merced County get a better grasp of science, engineering and technology, MCOE said in a news release. The Get S.E.T. (science, engineering and technology) team is a service learning club at UC Merced.
Christopher Viney, professor and founding faculty at UC Merced and the team’s faculty mentor, will open the evening with a science demonstration.
Students will also have the opportunity see a basic electric motor in action, view part of a kinetic sculpture, play a PVC pipe guitars and make secret writing in lemon juice, among other activities.
The main objective of the Service Learning team is to increase the level of interest in science and math subjects for Merced County students.
