A newly hired dairy worker who was about to start his first shift was killed and another man was wounded late Saturday night during a shooting at a Chowchilla barn, the Madera County Sheriff's Department reported.
The death is Madera County's first homicide this year, according to the department.
The shooting happened between 11:30 p.m. and midnight at a dairy at 5615 Avenue 24 between Roads 51/2 and 6, said sheriff's spokeswoman Erica Stuart.
One man died at the scene, she said. The other victim was taken to an area hospital, where his condition was unavailable.

Sheriff's investigators are trying to sort out why the men were shot and who they are, Stuart said.
Investigators believe there may have been two shooters, but authorities don't know what the motive may have been, Stuart said.
The property owner did not return phone calls seeking comment.
