One dead after truck hauling bees crashes on Interstate 5

PATTERSON -- A truck hauling bee hives crashed and overturned on southbound Interstate 5 early Thursday morning, and one person was killed, the California Highway Patrol reported. The CHP issued a "Sig alert" because the accident caused a major disruption of traffic.

The CHP received a report of the crash near Diablo Grande Parkway at 3:19 a.m.

Patrol officers said 75 bee hives were scattered on the highway. Both lanes were blocked for a short while, and one of the lanes didn't reopen until after 9 a.m.

The CHP called in a beekeeper to deal with the bees that swarmed the area after the wreck.

Details on the victim were not immediately available.
