The Merced County Spring Fair is the safest place to be in Merced County during fair week, says security coordinator Vern Warnke.
As head of the fair’s security detail, Warnke sets the tone on the grounds from the time gates open on April 30 until the last visitor exits the grounds.
“I coordinate all our efforts with the sheriff’s deputies and we make sure safety is a priority,” said Warnke, who is a retired sheriff’s sergeant from Merced County.
The fair does have a dress code. Warnke said the fair policy is no weapons of any kind and no gang colors. The policy is strictly enforced at all times, he said. The fair’s event staff will be operating metal detectors at every gate during the fair.
“We have a great system and a great track record for safety going back 30 years. We plan to continue that tradition,” he added.
