Getting a gift for mom or letting her pick out her own present was the objective of hundreds at Pacheco Park last weekend as the Los Banos Tiger Sharks held their annual two-day Mother’s Day in the Park.
The fundraiser attracted scores of arts and crafts vendors. Paintings, jewelry, hats, clothing, purses and home décor items were available for purchase.
The Los Banos Kiwanis Club held its annual breakfast Sunday morning.
“When I was little, we used to go have breakfast, shop and look around,” said Cindy Clawson, attending with her child. “There’s lots of pretty stuff out here. Homemade, that’s something I really like.”
Trisha and Joleena Farrulla were shopping for a gift.
“My daughter wants to get her grandmother a gift,” said Trisha Farrulla.
Joleena Farrulla, 15, said she hadn’t decided yet, but was considering buying a candle.
Angela McMann, who comes every year, said she likes how the event brings the community together.
Hollister resident Rosemary Vallejo said she and her family heard about Mother’s Day in the Park and decided to make a day out of it. After shopping, Vallejo and her relatives were off to eat at Wool Growers on H Street.
Mother’s Day in the Park brings in about $90 per vendor. There were 45 vendors. After all of the expenses, including park rental and permits, are paid, the money goes to the Los Banos Tiger Sharks Swim Team. The team uses the money for swimsuits and other items. On Sunday, a handful of vendors had folded their tents and packed up because the wind was threatening to topple their booths.
“A lot of them came to us and said, ‘We have to go because we can’t set up because of the wind,’ ” said event organizer Benito Marquez. “We told them we understand.”
The event is a good way for vendors to make money, because of the eager customer base. Elsa Perez of Trendy Salon said she participates every year and the purses and other items she sells have become popular at the event.
Mother’s Day in the Park also include pony rides, Folklorico dancers, martial arts demonstrations and other entertainment.
