Rain causes another rockslide on Highway 140

BRICEBURG -- The California Highway Patrol reported a rockslide on Highway 140 near Hites Coves Four Wheel Drive Road. Several tons of debris blocked one lane of the highway, west of El Portal and about a mile east of Savage's Trading Post.

The rockslide was reported shortly after 7:30 a.m., when it was discovered by a National Park ranger.

CHP Sgt. Edward Greene said part of a hillside next to the highway collapsed because of recent rains. No one was hurt.

The slide happened less than two miles east of the Ferguson Rockslide, which buried the highway in 3 million cubic yards of rock and debris in April 2006.

State transportation officials removed a short emergency bridge that bypassed the rubble last summer to install two interim bridges long enough to accommodate tour buses seeking to travel through Yosemite's western gate.
