The Half Dome climbing cables are open for the season, Yosemite National Park officials announced today.
The 17-mile round-trip hike includes an elevation gain of 4,800 feet and is considered extremely strenuous. Hikers use the metal cables along the steep shoulder of Half Dome as they walk and pull themselves up to the summit.
Because of danger from lightning, hikers are advised not to attempt reaching summit if thunderstorms are in the area.
